How far is Lakewood Ranch from the beach?

The nearest Gulf beaches are about 15 to 18 miles from Lakewood Ranch, according to the developer. Lakewood Ranch describes Siesta Key, Lido Key, Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island as “about 15-18 miles” away, and puts the community about 12 miles, or about 20 minutes, northeast of downtown Sarasota and Siesta Key. Lakewood Ranch is inland, east of I-75, so every beach trip means crossing Sarasota or Bradenton and a bridge to a barrier island.

Your real drive depends on where in Lakewood Ranch you start (the eastern villages add several miles), the day of the week and the season. In winter and spring, and on summer weekends, island traffic and parking can add a lot. Check a map app for your own start point.

What is Siesta Key like?

Siesta Beach is the area’s most famous beach: wide, soft white sand, turquoise water and plenty of facilities, which also makes it the busiest. Dr. Beach ranked it the top beach in the United States in 2011 and again in 2017, as the Observer reported.

Siesta Beach, at 948 Beach Road, has lifeguards, a playground, volleyball, picnic pavilions, concessions, restrooms, beach wheelchairs and parking. Its historic pavilion was designed by Edward J. Seibert of the Sarasota School of Architecture.

Siesta Key has two other public options:

  • Crescent Beach runs south from Siesta Beach to Point of Rocks. It has only two public access points and is lined with condominiums, so it is quieter.
  • Turtle Beach Park, at 8918 Midnight Pass Road toward the south end of the key, has many more shells, plus a picnic shelter, a playground and a kayak launch. Lifeguards are not listed.

Arrive early on weekends and in season. Once the lots fill, finding a spot near the sand gets hard.

What is Lido Key like?

Lido Key is the closest beach to Lakewood Ranch and the most convenient to pair with dinner or shopping, because you drive through St. Armands Circle to get there. Visit Sarasota describes Lido as having a slower pace and often secluded shores.

There are three main areas:

  • Lido Beach Park (400 Benjamin Franklin Drive) has lifeguards, a public pool, picnic shelters, a concession and parking. Sarasota County manages the beach and dunes, while the City of Sarasota manages the facilities, pool and parking.
  • North Lido Beach is quieter and good for sunsets, but it has no lifeguards.
  • South Lido Park sits at the southern tip, overlooking downtown Sarasota.

What are Anna Maria Island’s beaches like?

Anna Maria Island has an old-Florida feel, with several public beaches of different personalities and a free trolley to Pine Avenue. The developer puts it about 15 to 18 miles from Lakewood Ranch, reached through Bradenton.

Beach What it is like Lifeguards
Coquina Beach Colorful small shells, a short walk from the Bridge Street shops Yes
Cortez Beach Fishing and swimming, occasional surf near the “Three Piers” Yes
Manatee Public Beach Family-friendly, picnic areas, volleyball, playground Yes
Holmes Beach Family amenities and a beachside cafe; dolphins and manatees often spotted Only at Manatee Public Beach
Anna Maria Beach Quiet north end, great sunsets, free trolley to Pine Avenue No
Bean Point Powder-soft sand at the island’s northern tip, views of Tampa Bay and the Sunshine Skyway No

Manatee County says Coquina Beach, Cortez Beach and Manatee Public Beach are the only beaches in the county with professional lifeguards. Beer Can Island (Greer Island) is a rustic spot reachable only by boat, kayak or paddleboard, according to Visit Bradenton Gulf Islands.

What about Longboat Key, Venice and farther afield?

Longboat Key is mostly private, Venice is the place for shark teeth, and Clearwater is a day trip.

  • Longboat Key has limited public beach access because private homes and resorts line most of it. Whitney Beach, a quarter-mile stretch at the north end, has few facilities, so bring what you need.
  • Venice, farther south in Sarasota County, is famous for the fossil shark teeth found along its shore. Caspersen Beach is the longest beach in Sarasota County, and Brohard Paw Park is a designated dog beach.
  • Casey Key and Nokomis, on the way to Venice, offer Nokomis Beach and North Jetty Park, which has lifeguards and a snack bar.
  • Clearwater Beach and the St. Petersburg beaches are across Tampa Bay to the north. The developer calls them a quick day trip, better for an occasional outing than a regular routine.

Which beach should you pick?

Pick Lido for convenience, Siesta for the classic big-beach day, Turtle Beach or Longboat Key for quiet, and Anna Maria Island for a full-day outing.

  • Young kids: Siesta Beach (lifeguards, playground, restrooms), Lido Beach Park (lifeguards, pool, restrooms), or Manatee Public Beach on Anna Maria Island (lifeguards, playground).
  • Shelling: Turtle Beach and Coquina Beach.
  • Fossil hunting: Venice and Caspersen Beach.
  • Dogs: Brohard Paw Park in Venice, a designated dog beach. Check the rules before bringing a dog anywhere else.
  • Sunsets with dinner: Lido Key with St. Armands Circle, or Anna Maria Island with Pine Avenue or Bridge Street.

What should you check before you go?

Check red tide, weather and parking before you load the car.

  • Red tide. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission updates a sampling map daily and posts status reports on Friday afternoons. Even low concentrations can cause respiratory irritation and possible fish kills, according to the agency.
  • Afternoon storms. In summer, thunderstorms often build in the afternoon. Head out early and leave when you hear thunder.
  • Facilities after storms. Hurricanes can close pavilions, parking lots and walkovers for repairs. Check the county parks site or the tourism office’s beach conditions page.
  • Sun and heat. Bring more water than you think you need, plus shade.
